As you may know, I have been a student assistance consultant in the metropolitan Atlanta area for more than thirty years. I have worked with Georgia's Departments of Education and Human Resources state-wide in addition to public/private schools and businesses domestically and internationally.
This site is focused on bullying prevention best practices and how to decrease bully/victim behavior in both education and the workplace. My services include offering workshops and training for managers, administrators, counselors, teachers, parents, students, and community leaders.
Short Bio:
Michael R. Carpenter, PhD, is a violence, drug, and student assistance program consultant who lives in metropolitan Atlanta (Georgia). He has worked with Cobb County Schools for more than twenty years, statewide for the Department of Education and Human Resources, and as a consultant throughout the United States and abroad in such countries as Japan, New Zealand, Mexico, and Belize. He is founder of the Prevention Intervention Center of Cobb Schools, Georgia’s Student Assistance Professionals Association (SAPA), and the International Bullying Prevention Conference which started in 2004 in Atlanta. Mike is a Nationally Certified Olweus Bullying Prevention Program trainer (2001).
Michael is an author of manuals from student assistance to peer mediation to class meetings to suicide and bullying prevention. His latest publications are Directionality, assessing one’s ability to view the world through different lenses by examining communication pathways ; Waging Peace: A Bullying Prevention Handbook with 45 connecting, bullying prevention and civility lessons; Setting the Tone: Creating Bully-Free Connected Classrooms, a book bettering best practices using tenets from Perceptual Control Theory; and Implementation and Procedural Guide for Prohibiting Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation, a manual that satisfies a state requirement to implement a bullying prevention policy thereby reducing bully/victim behavior using a risk management model. �� Have a written bullying prevention policy? 45 states have specific anti-bullying legislation. Below are examples of specific state requirements recently enacted:
�� Have an established training program for staff?
�� Focus on research based-strategies?
�� Assess bullying at each building level?
�� Identify bullying hotspots on campus?
�� Have buy-in from administration, staff & parents?
�� Discuss non-coercive adult role modeling?
�� Train staff to intervene with an on-the-spot script?
�� Address school climate issues and safe learning?
AL legislation applies only to student against student harassment, intimidation & violence.
GA requires schools to develop a model policy addressing reporting incidents & procedures for investigation, an age-appropriate range of consequences, ways to prohibit retaliation, & immunity from liability for those acting in good faith.
NJ addresses harassment, bullying & intimidation, in addition to cyber bullying and hazing.
NY and the “Dignity for All Students Act” prohibits discrimination of students based on a person’s race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or sex.
WA An electronic act of the law is one that (1) physically harms a student or damages its property; (2) has the effect of substantially interfering with a student's education; (3) is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or (4) has the effect of substantially disrupting the operation of the school.
